    Determining layer number of two dimensional flakes of transition-metal dichalcogenides by the Raman intensity from substrate

    Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors have been widely studied due to their distinctive electronic and optical properties. The property of TMD flakes is a function of its thickness, or layer number (N). How to determine N of ultrathin TMDs materials is of primary importance for fundamental study and practical applications. Raman mode intensity from substrates has been used to identify N of intrinsic and defective multilayer graphenes up to N=100. However, such analysis is not applicable for ultrathin TMD flakes due to the lack of a unified complex refractive index (n~\tilde{n}) from monolayer to bulk TMDs. Here, we discuss the N identification of TMD flakes on the SiO2_2/Si substrate by the intensity ratio between the Si peak from 100-nm (or 89-nm) SiO2_2/Si substrates underneath TMD flakes and that from bare SiO2_2/Si substrates. We assume the real part of n~\tilde{n} of TMD flakes as that of monolayer TMD and treat the imaginary part of n~\tilde{n} as a fitting parameter to fit the experimental intensity ratio. An empirical n~\tilde{n}, namely, n~eff\tilde{n}_{eff}, of ultrathin MoS2_{2}, WS2_{2} and WSe2_{2} flakes from monolayer to multilayer is obtained for typical laser excitations (2.54 eV, 2.34 eV, or 2.09 eV). The fitted n~eff\tilde{n}_{eff} of MoS2_{2} has been used to identify N of MoS2_{2} flakes deposited on 302-nm SiO2_2/Si substrate, which agrees well with that determined from their shear and layer-breathing modes. This technique by measuring Raman intensity from the substrate can be extended to identify N of ultrathin 2D flakes with N-dependent n~\tilde{n} . For the application purpose, the intensity ratio excited by specific laser excitations has been provided for MoS2_{2}, WS2_{2} and WSe2_{2} flakes and multilayer graphene flakes deposited on Si substrates covered by 80-110 nm or 280-310 nm SiO2_2 layer.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.     The Motivators of Students\u27 Behavioral Intention Towards Online Discussion Forum Participation

    Online discussion forum (ODF) has been touted to enrich the process of acquiring, sharing and exchanging knowledge among students and has increasingly being utilized to complement the conventional ways of teaching. Despite the widespread recognition of the benefits brought about by ODF, antecedent evidence indicates that the forum may not be utilized to its full potential due to lower than expected student participation. Drawing on the literature in social psychology and technology adoption and applying the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this research seeks to identify the motivational behavioral factors influencing the student’s intention to participate in ODF. A two-phase research process was adopted: first of which involved the usage of qualitative survey data and extensive literature review to build the conceptual model of ODF participation intention. Subsequently, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to empirically test the model. Results were analyzed and implications were discussed

    Distinct distributed patterns of neural activity are associated with two languages in the bilingual brain

    A large body of previous neuroimaging studies suggests that multiple languages are processed and organized in a single neuroanatomical system in the bilingual brain, although differential activation may be seen in some studies because of different proficiency levels and/or age of acquisition of the two languages. However, one important possibility is that the two languages may involve interleaved but functionally independent neural populations within a given cortical region, and thus, distinct patterns of neural computations may be pivotal for the processing of the two languages. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and multivariate pattern analyses, we tested this possibility in Chinese-English bilinguals when they performed an implicit reading task. We found a broad network of regions wherein the two languages evoked different patterns of activity, with only partially overlapping patterns of voxels in a given region. These regions, including the middle occipital cortices, fusiform gyri, and lateral temporal, temporoparietal, and prefrontal cortices, are associated with multiple aspects of language processing. The results suggest the functional independence of neural computations underlying the representations of different languages in bilinguals

    Validated method to measure yakuchinone A in plasma by LC-MS/MS and its application to a pharmacokinetic study in rats

    BACKGROUND: Yakuchinone A has a plethora of beneficial biological effects. However, the pharmacokinetic (PK) data of yakuchinone A still remain unknown so far. Furthermore, the quantification of yakuchinone A in biological samples has not been reported in the literature. Therefore, in the present study we aimed to develop a new method for the fast, efficient and accurate assessment of yakuchinone A concentration in plasma, as a means for facilitating the PK evaluation of yakuchinone A. RESULTS: A liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of yakuchinone A in rat plasma. Mass spectrometric and chromatographic conditions were optimized. Plasma samples were pretreated by protein precipitation with methanol. LC separation was performed on a Phenomenex Luna C18 column with gradient elution using a mobile phase consisting of methanol–water containing 0.5 mM formic acid (HCOOH) at a flow rate of 0.28 mL/min. ESI-MS spectra were acquired in positive ion multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM). The precursor-to-product ion pairs used for MRM of yakuchinone A and yakuchinone B were m/z 313.1 → 137.0 and 311.2 → 117.1, respectively. Low concentration of HCOOH reduced the ion suppression caused by matrix components and clearly improved the analytical sensitivity. Yakuchinone A showed good linearity over a wide concentration range (r > 0.99). The accuracy, precision, stability and linearity were found to be within the acceptable criteria. This new method was successfully applied to analyze the rat plasma concentration of parent yakuchinone A after a single oral administration of SuoQuan capsules. Low systemic exposure to parent yakuchinone A was observed. CONCLUSION: The proposed method is sensitive and reliable. It is hoped that this new method will prove useful for the future PK studies
